Washi paper craftsman  SYUNSUKE TSUCHIYA

Born in 1986, I majored in Business Administration at university.

At 28, I met Machiko Chuta in my hometown, who was making handmade Japanese paper, and got fascinated by paper making. I became her apprentice and, in 2016, established the "Kojiro Washi Preservation Society" with local volunteers.

While proposing ways to use Jindai Washi, my friend happened to try coffee brewed with Japanese paper and was amazed by the taste. To let more people know about it, I started my own business, "Kojiro Washiya," in 2019.

In 2022, I won the top prize at the Okayama Prefecture Federation of Chamber of Commerce Youth Division's presentation contest with a story about handmade Japanese paper coffee filters and also placed second in the Chugoku-Shikoku regional competition.

Currently, mainly at Okayama University but also with students from universities in Tokyo and Osaka, I coordinate the "Furusato Mirai College" (a Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications project), growing raw materials for Jindai Washi on abandoned farmland and working to preserve this traditional paper.

To me, Kojiro washi represents all the things I love about my hometown—the local mountains and fields, the clear streams, and well water. Because of that, Kojiro washi can still be made here today.

Back in the day, we could make all the materials ourselves, but now, with fewer farmers around, we often have to buy them from elsewhere. That’s why I’m working to grow the raw materials here again and bring back the landscapes of the town with Kojiro washi.

I still remember the first time I drank coffee brewed with Kamiyo washi and couldn’t help but shout, ‘Wow, this is amazing! What is this!?’
Many people hesitate to throw away washi that could last a thousand years in an instant, but if the surprise and wonder I felt stays with someone for a long time, then I want to keep making Kojiro washi over and over again.

Passing it on to the next generation

Alongside my creative work, I also work on spreading traditional culture through experiences like making Japanese paper. I keep engaging with it every day to make sure this beautiful tradition continues for another 100 years.
